Year 1

Year 1 Class teachers:  Miss Sherwood

Teaching Assistant: Mrs Stockdale

Spellings
Spellings go out on a Wednesday, and are tested on a Tuesday afternoon. The children will bring their spelling books home with them on the Wednesday to give you the opportunity to go over the ones they may have missed at home. Please make sure that spelling books come back to school before the next test the following Tuesday.

Spellings are linked to the discrete Phonics and SPAG sessions as the children progress through from Reception to Year 2.

In EYFS children are taught to read and then later to spell non-decodable, common exception words (tricky words) and will bring these home on a bookmark or flashcards when they are working at that Phase.

In Year One, children are grouped for Phonics; their spellings are specifically chosen for their group. The first four spellings will reflect the spelling pattern that they are currently learning or revising and the fifth spelling will be a common exception word. Initially, some children may continue working on becoming secure at reading and spelling their Phase 2 and 3 common exception words before being given spellings to bring home.

In Year 2 children are taught suffixes and prefixes along with other spelling rules and patterns. Children in year two will have ten spellings. The first eight spellings will reflect what they have been currently learning, along with two common exception words. These link with the new National Curriculum Word Lists.

Thank you to all the Year 1 and EYFS Parents who came to our information evening about Reading and Phonics. If you were not able to be there, or wanted to print out the materials, I have included the handouts and presentation below.

Please do not hesitate to get it touch with any member of the Early Years and Key Stage One teaching team if you have any further questions or suggestions.

Thank you for all your support of the children in their reading and phonics.
